We visited The Yard in Alderley Edge on Thursday 17th December to review the Winter Woodland Feast.

Travelling from just inside the North Wales border we set off in plenty of time to make sure we arrived for our 7.30pm booking.

With little traffic we found the venue tucked just off the main road and parked our car just a 50 metre walk or so from The Yard, this car park was a pay and display but was free after 3pm which was very welcome. There are a few on street parking areas around The Yard but all were busy upon our arrival.

The Yard itself is a very welcoming venue from the moment you walk through the door, we were greeted by a member of staff immediately and shown to our table which was through the small shop and bar area, we entered what then can only be described as a beautiful eating area, with a very homely feel to it, not too large an area as to lose the cosy feeling but plenty of space for the evenings function.

With a wood burning stove glowing and some soft background music playing, our jackets were taken and we were served a lovely welcoming mulled wine whilst we looked over the evenings menu.

With a selection of three starters, mains and deserts to choose from I opted for the Mushroom and Red wine Crea broth, Cider and Maple glazed Turkey and the Christmas pudding, my partner decided on the Smoked aubergine, Pork Tenderloin and the Eggnog pannacotta.

The starters were delightfully presented and very tasty indeed, a sign of good things to come we were sure, between this course and our mains we met Sophie who was a lovely pleasant young lady who upon taking our drinks order explained in great detail the selection available, as I was designated driver for the evening my partner was pleased to chat about the selection of fine ales The Yard has available and after much deliberation decided to try two out from the local Mobberley brewhouse, a decision he later loved as he seemed to enjoy them both hugely !

Our main courses arrived and both of our first thoughts were wow! The portions were of large quantity and looked and smelt fabulous, accompanied with some fantastic vegetables this truly was a woodland feast of epic proportions, during the main the large screen in the restaurant proceeded to play Raymond Briggs’ The snowman whilst the light music played in the background too, the atmosphere was gorgeous amongst the guests, I would say around 20-25 people which made for a relaxed evening.

After our Main courses were cleared away we sat and wondered quite how we would manage to squeeze in our deserts, needless to say we both did and thoroughly enjoyable they were too, washed down with a sacred cacao elixir (described as a healthy hot chocolate) and a coffee we were then treated to some live entertainment provided by Sadie, one of the proprietors of this fabulous family run business, a lovely way to end a superb evening.

The Yard is so much more than a restaurant though and as we were reviewing the evening we still feel we should add that there is also a shop which has handcrafted gifts, books, homewares, clothing and healthy treats and supplements available too.

It was a fabulous venue, with helpful and happy staff, a real feel good factor is in the air around the place and it was such a warm and friendly family run business, I would certainly recommend a visit and will most definitely be back again for sure.
