The entertaining and heart-warming musical ‘Wonderland’ is currently at the Regent Theatre, Stoke-On-Trent as part of a national tour. The energetic show with messages about identity and life-choices is a must-see for any fans of musical theatre.

Inspired by the novel ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll, this enchanting tale with a contemporary twist is brought to life on stage with music by Frank Wildhorn. Alice, the single mum of a teenage girl called Ellie, is struggling in life and hasn’t noticed neighbour Jack, who has been admiring her from afar. When all 3 meet a white rabbit and get taken to the magical world of Wonderland an adventure begins which will change their outlook on life forever.

Throughout the night the talented cast demonstrated excellent musical and dance ability. Kerry Ellis as Alice performed every song with emotion and tenderness. Stephen Webb as Jack had an amazing transformation during the power ballad ‘One Knight’ supported by his boy band style knights. The biggest surprise of the night were the vocals from the Queen of Hearts played by Wendi Peters – who knew Cilla Battersby had such lungs on her!

There were times when the dancing and music seemed chaotic but that just reinforced the message of the show. Alice had to choose whether she needed a hero or could save herself, remember that the real world is messy but full of wonder, and acknowledge that if we move too fast we miss so much. These are just a few of the quotes from the script – it felt like if I watched the show again there would be even more inspiring messages to pick up.

The Regent Theatre is in the Hanley area of the city where the staff are warm and welcoming. The piano bar is a perfect place to have a pre-show glass of wine or hot drink, while the main foyer also stocks a variety of drinks and snacks.

I can’t remember the last time I left a show desperate to watch it all over again but this was definitely one of them. All I can say is, book your tickets, you won’t be disappointed.
