Before we arrived I wasn’t sure what to expect. We had never even considered staying in a hostel before. When we arrived we noticed the position was great, very close to the pier and the lanes shopping. Parking was a little walk away and cost a fair bit but this is standard in Brighton.
The building itself looked grand on the exterior. When we entered we were gob smacked at how lovely it is. The decor inside resembled an upmarket hotel. Very smart and some lovely quirky touches. None of the character of this old building has been lost when it was done up. We checked in and were given ‘egg tokens’ for breakfast which the children thought was great!
We went up the lift to the second floor and found our room, the corridors were decorated to a high standard too. This did not feel how I imagined a hostel to be.
Walking into our room we couldn’t believe it. It was massive with a large bay window, a sofa and three lots of bunk beds. We loved the decor, the wallpaper was so lovely and different. In the large tiled bathroom we were delighted to see a bath, a separate shower, toilet and basin. This was a very clean and spacious bathroom!
Downstairs there was a bar which served food. The chairs were very comfortable and all different which added to the quirky nature of YHA.
We were surprised to see a self-catering kitchen with everything you could imagine you would maybe need along with some free bits like cereal. This room had all fitted units and mod cons as well as tables and chairs. I think we would have liked to have moved in!
We had a comfortable and warm night’s sleep. Due to single glazing it was a little noisy as the night wore on but ear plugs solved this. It wouldn’t put me off going back at all and I’m a very light sleeper. The children said the bunk beds with their individual lights and little table was their favourite part.
In the morning we went down for breakfast. There was a good selection available including hot food, continental food, toast, hot drinks and juice. This was all very tasty and served in a lovely clean and nicely decorated dining room. The little touches like a notebook and pen saying to close your eyes and draw a friend made all the difference, injecting some fun. Touches like this make it a memorable stay.
The reception staff were great, very informative and happy to help as were the bar and breakfast staff.
I can honestly say we were amazed at the accommodation on offer and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to others. We will also be returning ourselves.
Thank you YHA for a lovely weekend.
