Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Review

Reviewed by David Savage

I love reading and nothing will ever beat the feel of a real book in your hands. I already own one of the Amazon Kindle eBook readers with a keyboard but decided to buy the new Kindle Paperwhite and I’m very impressed.

On receiving and going through the straightforward setup, it was already registered to my Amazon account, I was ready to go. Because I already own a previous Kindle that is registered to the same Amazon account all my eBook purchases were available on the Paperwhite so I didn’t have to purchases any of the titles again which I thought was excellent.

So within seconds of selecting a book to download from my library I was reading to start reading. The 6” screen itself is white and bright with a built in light and does exactly what the adverts say and can be read in bright sunshine and has no screen glare. I also found that I could read in the dark with no problem and no eye strain. It has a touch screen so to turn a page just swipe or alternatively just tap the left or right side of the screen to go backwards or forwards. And your position in the book is always kept so you can easily go back to it.

The text size is very easily adjusted so no matter how good or bad you eyesight is you can have small or large text and various degrees inbetween.

With a capacity to hold up to 1,100 eBooks (2GB internal storage) you will always be able to carry your entire library with you. If you have more titles than this they are stored in the cloud so even if you delete a title from the device it is still always available, once you buy a title you never lose it.

It also has other features that I am to fully utilise yet like highlighting a word to find the meaning in the dictionary or on Wikipedia (need to be connected via wireless).

It is also very light weighing 206 grams (more if you add a case which I have down to protect it). The battery life varies depending on your set up but can last up to 2 months if used for 30 minutes a day with the wireless off and screen brightness set at 10. I read for more than 30 minutes a day but so far have only charged it once in the 2 weeks I have had it. It was charged when I received it but I never checked to see if it was a full charge before using it.

My only criticism is that it does not come with a wall charger, this can be purchased as an optional extra. It does come with a USB cable to charge on your PC/Laptop but as I am not always around a computer I would prefer a wall charger. So when paying £109 for the Kindle itself having to spend another £17 on the wall charger is a bit of a let down.

I absolutely love the Kindle, it’s very light, fits easily into my pocket and I take it everywhere with me. I still prefer a proper book but obviously cannot carry around a large book library with me so the Kindle is excellent for the large choice you can take with you. And I love the fact that I can read in the dark without straining my eyes or having to put on the bedside lamp.

I would rate it 4.5 out of 5. It would be 5 if it was supplied with a wall charger so if I knew I was away for a while I wouldn’t have to bring my laptop to plug it into.
