Brewers Fayre: The Stonebrook, Holystone, Newcastle Review

Reviewed by Kerry Pattison

Maybe I shouldn’t have, but I couldn’t help having a look at reviews on other sites before my visit today to The Stonebrook, North Shields. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by my overall experience and disagree with the negative comments I have read.

Firstly, the Brewers Fayre venue was a well-kept, attractive building situated next door to a Premier Inn with ample secure parking. Inside the decor was modern and clean with a welcome seating area leading to the main bar/ restaurant.

We were greeted within seconds by a friendly young member of staff, and although we were 10 minutes early we were promptly escorted us to our (reserved) table.

After allowing us to settle in, our server explained the ordering process which was that drinks and food were to be ordered at the bar. Personally I prefer to be able to order from the table, however it wasn’t an issue as the bar was quiet and the staff member taking our order was efficient and helpful, even checking if we were going to order deserts as it would work out better value if we chose their current 3 course offer.

We dined as a family (2 adults and 1 12 year old). We ordered tomato soup and prawn cocktail for starters. Unfortunately there was a delay with my son’s starter, my husband had finished his soup by the time the prawn cocktail arrived 8 min later. However as both starters were lovely tasting and well presented this was soon forgotten.

As we had ordered soft drinks we were entitled to unlimited refills, which our server Helen ensured were in constant supply throughout our meal.

For our main meal I chose gammon with pineapple and garden peas (eggs were an alternative option), my husband chose a 8oz rump steak which was served with onion rings, garden peas and grilled tomatoes, my son chose the rack of ribs served with coleslaw. All were served with chips which would be my only criticism as I would have preferred there to have been a selection of accompaniments to choose from such as vegetables, jacket potatoes or salad. That said, the food was delicious and well-presented, we felt as though it hadn’t just been removed from some pre-cooked packet and heated up, as it is in some bar/ restaurant chains.

For dessert I ordered a baked raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake (with the option of ice cream) and my son ordered a chocolate chip sundae. The sundae was huge and couldn’t be finished off! I have to say I didn’t have the same problem with the cheesecake as the portion was just right. Again if asked to give my opinion I would say more thought needs to be given to the presentation of the cheesecake, as a slice on a plate with a small scoop of ice cream looked a bit unexciting. A drizzle of puree would have made it look so much better!

Overall we were very happy with our meals, the venue, prices, cleanliness and service of the staff (although we did wonder if they would have been this attentive had they not known I was there to conduct a review).

I would recommend The Stonebrook and would not hesitate to return again next time I am in the area (very handy if you are planning a visit to Boundary Mills shopping outlet!).
