The musical is based on the classic 1987 film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey and features hit songs such as “Hungry Eyes”, “Hey! Baby”, “Do You Love Me?” and “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life”.
It was the Summer of 63 and the dancing was known as a social form a choice of partner, a community coming together and a way of telling a story….
Well let me tell you this production definitely pulled out all the stops to cover an award-winning film in the way Gillian Bruce, the choreographer, has kept a very steamy passionate and HOT atmosphere but holiday camp feel to the show without leaving out any area. She even managed with the lighting man Valerio Tiberi to include the scenes of the log balance in the woods and the water lifts and the stage is alive with very fast scene changes, done by Roberto Comotti.
The rapport between Kira Malou and Michael O’Reilly is so intimate and the dancing is so seductive and the way the bodies connect together… Very Hot Steamy Moments!!
Lizzie Ottley Baby’s Sister has the audience up more than once in uproar with her hilarious singing and dancing routines… The Hula!
Much of the singing that’s included feels natural in the holiday resort setting with group dances, between scenes etc…
Costume design has the women in luscious vintage dresses associated with the era and matches many of the outfits with what were worn in the film. Jennifer Irwin has even got the famous pink dress designed too for the last dance.
When it comes to iconic film quotes, ‘I carried a watermelon’ has got to be up there with the big ones – at least, if you’re female and grew up in the 90s. It certainly got a reaction, though not quite as big a reaction as ‘nobody puts Baby in the corner’.
The last dance, the electricity and impulse between Kira and Michael and the other dancers it felt like the Time of their Life and the whole audience was on their feet and involved and loving every second!
