Miele Greaseless Spoon Review

Reviewed by Amanda Hayes

As I am watching my waistline I was delighted to be invited to Miele’s first greaseless spoon pop up café at the Ice Tank WC2, which for one day only served a full English breakfast containing only half the calories of a normal fry up.  The breakfast was cooked in Miele’s Generation 6000 DGC6600XL PureLine combi-steam oven and created without any oil or fat by Masterchef finalist Sven-Hanson Britt.

The breakfast ingredients were cooked only using steam and contained only 533 calories, a massive difference from a fried full English which typically has 1,035 calories. On arrival we were served tea, iced water, homemade vanilla yoghurt with summer fruits and fresh brioche while the finishing touches were being made to the breakfast so it was served up as fresh as possible.

Then came out a fantastic perfectly cooked steam boiled egg with sourdough toast soldiers. It had been steamed in the oven for around four minutes and was runny in the centre but firm on the outside, a real delight.

This was swiftly followed by the piece de resistance the full English breakfast featuring a slow-cooked egg, homemade black pudding, venison sausage, streaky bacon, espresso mushrooms, confit tomatoes, baked beans and sourdough toast.

The steamed breakfast menu was created from scratch, with Sven curing his own bacon, cooking the whole belly and slicing it for service. The mushrooms were very unusual being ‘espresso’ mushrooms grown on coffee compost, an ingenious way of using a product that normally goes to waste. The baked beans were no ordinary beans from a tin but a mixture of dried coco beans, ageolet beans and butter beans cooked in a sauce of chopped tomatoes; white wine; cherry tomatoes and  chicken stock and were delicious.

Miele’s Generation 6000 DGC6600XL PureLine combi-steam oven is not cheap, but should last 20 years and has a large 48 litre capacity. It’s not just a steam oven and has grill and standard oven functions with which you can mix the steam to create a perfect meal. If you are watching your waistline or would just prefer a healthier lifestyle this oven is a must for any home.
