Montezuma's Monkey Bars
Reviewed by David Savage
I recently received 2 enormous bars of the Montezuma’s Monkey Bars to review. They weigh in at a massive HALF A KILO each (500 grams – 500 being a monkey in Cockney rhyming slang) and measure approx. 10” by 6”. Each bar has 15 large chunks each weighing about 33 grams, perfect for sharing if you are that way inclined. I had mine all to myself as it was just too good to share.
The bars are available in 5 different flavours:
Adam & Eve (meaning Believe) – Venezuelan Milk Chocolate with Orange and Whole Hazelnuts
Airs & Graces (meaning Races as in Epsom Races) – Ecuadorian Dark Chocolate with Nougat Pieces
Daisy Roots (meaning Boots) – Ecuadorian Dark Chocolate with Cherry and Almond Slices
Nanny Goat (meaning Boat) – Venezuelan Milk Chocolate with Salted Peanuts and Butterscotch)
Shake & Shiver (meaning River) – Ecuadorian Dark Chocolate with Peppermint & Cocoa Nibs)
I received Adam & Eve and Nanny Goat and although both had an excellent taste my favourite was the Nanny Goat with its large peanuts and butterscotch. I had to stop myself from eating the whole bar and put it away. The huge bars have 15 large chunks that break off easily and the 2 bars I tried each chunk was packed with peanuts/hazelnuts. With the mixture of nuts, chocolate and in my case orange and butterscotch the taste was mouth-watering and divine.
The packaging is decorated with images of London which is very appropriate for 2012 with the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics. These bars are handmade by a family owned British company.
Overall these bars have an excellent blend of flavours and a superb taste. These bars would make a great gift and would be ideal for sharing with a loved one. With an RRP of £13.99 they may at first glance be considered very expensive but once you taste this handmade, organic and ethical chocolate you will soon realise they are worth every penny and due to their size should last you a while.
I highly recommend these bars and I will be back to try the other 3 flavours.
These bars are available for www.montezumas.co.uk and its 5 shops (Brighton, Chichester, Winchester, Kingston-upon-Thames and Spitalfields in London), as well as John Lewis and all good independent fine food stores nationwide.
