I’m not very adventurous when it comes to doing my hair, I wash, blow dry and then straighten. My hair is quite long (midway down my back) but very thick and prone to frizz, which is why I was looking forward to giving the Nicky Clarke Smooth and Shine Frizz Control Hot Air Styler 1200W a try!
The styler came in an attractive box and was packaged nicely. The box contained the styler, 2 different sized brushes a 38mm brush to add volume, an extra-large 50mm brush for creating big and bouncy styles and a small instruction leaflet.
After reading the through the instructions (easy to understand but very brief) I washed and loosely towel dried my hair as it says not to use on soaking wet hair.
The styler itself is quite bulky and felt very wide in my hands but it wasn’t as heavy as my hair dryer. I started off using the larger brush and the styler delivered a nice consistent stream of hot air from the 1200w motor, it has 2 speed settings and 2 heat settings and a cool shot setting for the finishing touch. I found it difficult to grip my long straight hair with the bristles and ended up just brushing my hair with the heat on which is pretty much what I would do with a hair dryer and brush. I found it difficult to style my hair with it. I was unsure if I was doing it right so looked in the instruction leaflet again but it didn’t have any styling tips in so I turned to trusty YouTube to watch a tutorial. After a little research and playing about with my hair and the styler, I managed to dry all of my hair using the styler. There is a button that once pressed produces Ionic technology helps prevent frizz and promote shine, I had this button pressed throughout the whole process. Once finished styling, my hair was noticeably shiny and felt so soft, the same feeling when I have had a wash and blow dry at the hairdressers! My hair was quite volumised from using the styler as the round brush lifts hair and dries it from the root; my hair is quite thick so it was a little too much volume for me so calmed it down with some products. The smoothness and shine was still noticeable in my hair the following day which I was amazed by!
Overall I was very pleased with results, and would recommend this styler to friends and family as it’s so much easier to blow dry your hair with it, on the styling aspect of it I feel that it would be more suited to people with shoulder length hair or above as I found it quite difficult with long straight hair that hasn’t got any layers to style easily. It’s a very handy tool and with it there would be no need to use my hair dryer again, especially as my hair dryer has never made my hair super soft and shiny to the same extent as the styler did. It’s a very reasonable price as some hair dryers with a similar ionic function would be very expensive.
My only criticism is the instruction booklet would benefit from pictures/diagrams, suggestions on the basics of how to style your hair, as a complete novice of using a hot air styler, I was unsure where to start.
