I have been known to frequent the O’Neills in St Mary Street, Cardiff a few years ago when I’d go out with friends for a few drinks or a big night out. However since having children I’d never really considered it a place to take the family to eat so when I was asked to review it with my husband and children I was a little intrigued.

We visited the pub on a busy Friday lunchtime. It was busy but not uncomfortably so. There was a pleasant atmosphere with people enjoying drinks with friends or a nice meal. We had no difficulty in finding a table big enough for all six of us. We sat somewhat away from the bar area that allowed my youngest children, 2 year old twins, a little more freedom to look around. The restaurant had the provision of a high chair. I know that other high chairs were unavailable when we visited after asking for a second and I’m sure it is something that will be resolved in the very near future allowing for more families to experience their great service. Staff were all very friendly and accommodating helping to carry the needed high chair and move around seating too. Once we settled in the staff member informed us that the menu we were choosing from was just days old so I was excited to see what was on offer. The new menu is extensive there really is something for everyone. There was Mexican food, classic pub grub even a daytime special, on the day we went it was Friday fish club. Although a fantastic choice, initially, it did made choosing a meal a little daunting especially for someone as indecisive as myself. However after having a chat with staff I was able to finally make my mind up, I chose a mixed grill and my husband chose beef steak fajita wrap. My children however had absolutely no problem in choosing. Each of them deciding in seconds exactly what they wanted. The children’s menu offered a nice range of dishes including the usual chicken nuggets or sausages and the not so usual wraps. As a mum I am keen to encourage my children to eat a balanced healthy diet I was pleased to see chips weren’t they only potato option and vegetables were actively encouraged. We chose a real variety of meals including; chicken nuggets and chips, spaghetti bolognaise, sausage, mash and veg and make your own chicken wraps.

We weren’t kept waiting long for our food and it all arrived together. The meals were lovely and hot and obviously freshly prepared. The children tucked in excitedly. The staff were very helpful in providing teaspoons for the smaller people in our party. All the children enjoyed their meals but there were a few things I would have liked to have changed. The mash and sausages could have done with a gravy or sauce although well prepared it lacked a little something. The build your own wrap was a fantastic idea that went down a treat with Caitlin. I felt it could have done with the addition of a side. All the other children’s portions were a generous size however the build your own fajita wasn’t quite the same. This is a very small criticism and all the meals were delicious. I had a completely faultless mixed grill. The steak was cooked beautifully to my taste. My husband’s fajitas were really tasty. He was really impressed with the selection of sauces that came with his dish. The cost of all the meals were as I’d expect. The quality of the products were very good and were all beautifully prepared.

I’d recommend a visit to O’Neill’s for a meal to anyone with or without children. It provided an excellent menu, with fantastic choice, delicious food and excellent service.
