Shrek the Musical at Milton Keynes Theatre Review

25 July to 5 August 2018

If you’re looking for a super fun, witty adventure with a splattering of green then this is absolutely the show for you. Shrek the musical is currently running at Milton Keynes theatre until Sunday 5th August as is as perfect for adults, as it is kids.

Over 2 hours and 30 minutes following Shrek and his new found pal Donkey in their adventure to rescue Princess Fiona. This stage adaptation, based on the Dreamworks film released in 2001, follows the same storyline with some adapted and very topical and current twists and of course many musical numbers.

Shrek, played by Steffan Harri, and Donkey, played by Marcus Alton, reproduce the comedic bond between the two characters perfectly and there are laughs aplenty whenever Donkey is on stage! Laura Main as Princess Fiona is another wonderful casting, her portrayal between demure and manic is very funny. My absolute favourite character though has to be Lord Farquaad played by Samuel Holmes. Comedy timing, facial expressions and just exceptionally funny, not to mention his cheekily named horse.

There are lots of familiar faces including Gingy, the three pigs, Peter Pan, Wolf and Pinocchio who all aid the adventure and provide some wonderful group numbers.

The show has many elaborate scene changes which continually add to moving the story along, whether you are watching the cast navigate forests, cross lava bridges, climb towers, enter castles or camp out in abandoned houses, it’s fast paced nature doesn’t allow you time to lose a single thread of the story. It’s wonderful to attend a show where there really are laugh out loud moments and such well executed musical arrangements. The cast are accompanied by an astounding orchestra of 7.

The theatre itself offers fantastic vantage points no matter where you are sat and was, as always, a pleasure to visit. Staff are friendly and welcoming, and the facilities are clean and easily found.

Without a doubt everyone in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas should go and see Shrek the musical!
