I was thrilled to be going to see The Addams Family – the musical comedy at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking. Having enjoyed the original 1991 film, I couldn’t wait to see it transformed for the stage.
The story follows the Addams family, consisting of husband and wife, Morticia and Gomez, their 2 children, Wednesday and Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandma and Lurch. The story is all about Wednesday, who falls in love and they all gather at the Addams family house for meal so that the parents can all meet. All Wednesday wants is for her family to act normal, and as you can imagine the night is far from normal, with hilarious results.
Morticia is played by the brilliant Samantha Womack, who does a fantastic job at playing the dark seductive wife. I was disappointed to find out that Les Dennis was unable to play Uncle Fester on opening night, but his replacement did a fantastic job, delivering lots of laughs.
The first half was full of upbeat dance routines and singing and kept me transfixed throughout. The second half had a bit more of a sombre feel but was equally as entertaining as the first half. I think this is a perfect show for the whole family to go and see with humour appealing to both the older audience and the younger theatre goers (age guidance 7+). The show is about 2 hours 30 minutes with an interval and the time just flew by.
The New Victoria Theatre is a lovely modern theatre conveniently located by the Peacocks Shopping Centre with ample parking and a cheap rate for parking in the evening.
We had a lovely evening out and thoroughly enjoyed the show. The Addams Family musical is definitely a must see.
Tickets cost from £21.40 to £59.40 (plus £2.85 transaction fee).
